International Baccalaureate Diploma Program
The American Youth Academy (AYA) gained the status of International Baccalaureate World School in October 2014. This status allows us to offer the IB Diploma Program to our students in grades 11 and 12. Since the inception of the program, the enrollment has been 36% of our 11th and 12th grade students. Our enrollment policy had been open which allows for diversity in the IBDP student body. However, there are a few minimum requirements in mathematics, standardized test scores, and work habits and ethics of the students to be eligible for the program. Students who are enrolled at AYA from ninth grade are placed on the pre-IB track based on the minimum requirements. Students who are not placed on this track are given the opportunity to switch tracks.
Designed for highly motivated students, the IB Diploma Programme is a rigorous two-year course of study leading to externally assessed examinations. The DP offers both breadths, in terms of the range of courses offered, and depth, in that students must take each for two years. It is a deliberate compromise between the specialization required by some colleges and universities and the breadth preferred by others. Students who do not wish to become full IB Diploma candidates may elect to take IB courses in their areas of academic strength. These students will receive an IB certificate for each course successfully completed.
Our pass rate so far has been 64%. The courses we offer for the full diploma program are:
Core: Theory of Knowledge (TOK) - Students focus on the nature of knowledge. Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) — Students complete projects in all three areas. Extended Essay — Students complete independent research and produce a 4000-word paper.
Students take three High Level (HL) courses and three Standard Level (SL) courses. All courses are taught over two years. Students are also given the opportunity to benefit from taking Advanced Placement (AP) classes as well as dual enrollment.
